The Artist
Rahul Mukerji is a multi-award-winning musician, composer, and visual artist whose work sits at the volatile intersection of fusion, rock, jazz, and cinematic sound design. Born in India and based in Germantown, Maryland for over two decades, he has cultivated a signature style that is technically ferocious and emotionally immersive in equal measure.
His debut album Ma De Re Sha (2017) established his voice and earned a Silver Medal at the 2018 Global Music Awards. Mridhangit is the full evolution of that vision — and has now taken home the UnsignedOnly Music Awards Global Music Artist Award alongside two Outstanding Achievement honours at the 2026 Global Music Awards (Creativity/Originality and Composer), making Rahul one of the most decorated independent world fusion artists working today.
The Album
Artwork: Proviscocity Studios
The title is a linguistic fusion: Mridangam (double-headed Carnatic drum) + Handpan (melodic steel drum) + Guitar (Mukerji's instrument). The name is the thesis — collaboration as both method and manifesto, forged across continents during the isolation of the pandemic era.
The album travels from the dark dissonance of the opener to funk-inflected camaraderie, Carnatic spoken rhythms, spaghetti-western twang, jazz-inflected swing, and a closing meditation of duduk and tabla. Nearly every one of its 11 tracks functions as a miniature suite.
Critical Reception & Awards
The sinuous scales of Indian and Eastern music, the fluid melodicism of jazz, the mathematical precision of prog-rock and the wailing and pounding of heavy metal: when all are approached with the same focus and deep thought, it becomes perfectly natural to hear how they come from the same roots.
All About Jazz — Geno Thackara, Sep 2026
A sense of unrestrained velocity and exuberance courses through the album, with relentless soloing woven around the mridangam and tabla patterns. Even at 50 minutes, the record retains a sense of momentum, deftly guiding the listener through a broad emotional spectrum — from a tandavam dawn to an abhoga dusk.
All About Jazz — Maciej Stasiowski, May 2026
We highly recommend this album to our readers. Drench yourself in this beautiful musical world of Rahul Mukerji and imbibe the beauty of a world made more sensual, more artistic, and more livable through Rahul Mukerji's music.
Jukebox Time — Ethan G, May 2026
A truly mind-melting experience — Rahul Mukerji collapsing genres and styles into each other as some sort of color-dripping prism. The culmination of almost a decade of experimentation and raw insight, resulting in an album so timeless and unique that it defies easy categorization — an absolute blast.
Be About It Press — BeachSloth, Apr 2026
Mridhangit by Rahul Mukerji is without doubt one of the most enjoyable listens I have had for absolutely years. This is also the most original work I have had the good pleasure to immerse myself into, and I applaud everyone and everything entirely on the release.
One World Music — Steve Sheppard, Aug 2026
Award-winning, critically celebrated, and richly deserving of the larger audience it has earned, Mridhangit is one of the most extraordinary and moving records you will encounter this year — do not miss it.
Obsidian Thoughts — Joanna, Aug 2026
The album is sensational, interesting and ever-changing, satisfying and euphoric, whilst also being entirely original in so many ways. Mridhangit is a genuinely outstanding, exceptional album.
Stereo Stickman — Rebecca Cullen, Aug 2026
The collaborative spirit is alive and well and soaring on Mridhangit. Nearly each of the 11 songs is an album highlight. A moody yet diverse world fusion album full of intricate arrangements and world-class musicianship.
Sea of Tranquility — Michael Popke, Jun 2026
